When we started to plan our 6 month backpacking trip last year we knew we had to hop on a train to travel around Europe. Every blog, every article, people we have talked to, all of them have said that traveling Europe by train is a must. So we purchased our Eurail passes from Rail Europe and set off to explore the European continent.
***Keep in mind that we purchased 1st class Global Passes which gave us access to 28 participating Eurail countries and to more comfortable, quieter cars and extra amenities. However, the other cars looked quite comfortable. We were able to get an extra 2 days of travel in addition to the regular 10 days (to be used over a 2 month period) because we purchased the passes during a special promotion and we also saved money on purchasing the passes together.
As soon as we set foot on our first train we could see why people loved traveling Europe on the rail system:
Traveling by train in Europe was our favorite form of transportation throughout our whole trip. Not only were we able to enjoy a little luxury and great scenery all while traveling to a new city but we were able to have a great deal more freedom than if we were traveling solely by airplane. It’s good to have a general itinerary in order to maximize your time on the train and to remember that some routes are more popular than others and need reservations. Don’t get stuck like we did in Barcelona when we didn’t reserve our seats to Madrid!
